Pay it Forward

I know all of you are coming to this blog today to read about my weight loss or 5 tips on how to do this or 5 tips on how to do that. Sometimes we take things for granted and forget about the past. Teachers groom us to be who we want to be and encourage us to do great things in life. Recently, I was asked to talk at two schools, one of them being my junior high school. Nervous, yes excited, yes but I could not be more happy to do it. Sometimes in life we have to stop and pay it forward.

Here is the speech/presentation I gave:

Good Afternoon Everyone,

First and foremost I would like to thank the faculty and staff of ___ for inviting me here today. It’s an honor and a privilege. My name is Craig Caruso and I’m a geek. Long before I became the owner of my own company I was a student sitting in the same seats that you are sitting in now. When I was a student I was picked on and made fun of being a nerd and having different interests than everyone else. My main focus was on computers and learning how they worked. That was an early sign of my career.

Name somebody successful?

All these people started somewhere. They started in school and with an idea or passion.

Let me tell you a small story about how I got started with CarusoApps:

During the spring months I play softball with a local team. One day I forgot the playbook at my desk and I did not want to walk back to the office. I thought to myself, with iPhone in hand, that their must be an easier way. I spent the next month reading, researching, and developing an iPhone App. A month later iLineup was born. I learned how to code by reading books and believing in myself, even with others doubting me. As soon as iLineup was launched I had businesses knocking on my door to create apps for them, most recently Rab’s Bowling Alley on Staten Island. The response was overwhelming. Something changed, something changed in me. I found myself taking on more responsibility than ever before. At 25, I realized that the world was at my fingertips and if you believe in yourself you can do anything you want.

I am a living, breathing example of living your passion. If you want to be a teacher when you grow up, then be a teacher and don’t let anyone stop you. You might have some roadblocks in the way but they are just challenges to make you a stronger and better person.

Make the connection, between the homework you do tonight and the test you take tomorrow and where you will be in five, ten, fifteen, fifty years from now. The real world is here at your doorstep and you can do anything you wish, you just have to believe. Don’t stop believing.

A famous entrepreneur once said  “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.”

That person is Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple.

If I leave you with anything today it’s believe in yourself, believe in your passion, follow your dreams, and happiness with family and friends comes first before anything else.

Thank You.

Just remember sometimes you have to pay it forward to move on to bigger things in life

The Mac App Store

The Mac App Store has launched, and being an iPhone Developer, I’m still on the fence about doing an app for the Mac. As of yesterday morning, Apple released over 1,100 apps for Mac users. Apps include all things from Twitter (Free) to Angry Birds ($4.99). This could be huge for Mac Developers, and the gold rush is already starting for some. During the iPhone launch, one developer made over 3 millions dollars in 2 years. He only spent 40 hours to make the app and now lives happily on easy street. Are you a Mac user? Are you excited for the Mac App Store? I spoke with Internet sensation, Carlo Montagino, of Daps.tv and he said, “People who compute now have an easy way to find apps they want/need and they shouldn’t be over run with garbage.” I agree with Carlo, even though Apple has a tight grip on Apps that enter “the store” some garbage apps do make it to market.

This Guy Sucks: Steve Jobs

Mr. Jobs, don’t you remember the days when you were in college cramming tests and papers? How about when you wanted to kiss-ass and make yourself look better than the rest of the students in your class? If your answer is yes, then why did you respond so crudely to Chelsea Kate Isaacs when she wanted to interview you for her Jourlanism class?

Gawker’s Adrien Chen reprints a not-so-pleasant exchange here between a college journalism student and the Apple CEO that ends with him telling her, “Please leave us alone.” Earlier, when she asked for help with Apple’s PR staff, he answered, “Our goals do not include helping you get a good grade. Sorry.” (Gawker had “tech-savvy” people look at the email headers and declare them legit.)

Long Island University student Chelsea Kate Isaacs got ticked off and made the emails public. “I was like, Wow, Steve Jobs, I get it,” she tells Gawker. “You made Apple, you have a shit-load of money but you have no class.” Asimilar spat emerged over the summer, though Apple denied that Jobs himself had written the responses in question. (Including the one telling a customer to “calm down.”) (via: http://www.newser.com)

5 Laptops you should buy before buying a MacBook Pro

Let’s face it not everyone can buy a MacBook Pro. The base model of the Apple MacBook Pro goes for 1,199 and the highest end model goes for 2,299. This is a lot for a bachelor to spend on a laptop. This post is dedicated on what else to buy besides a MacBook Pro after all I am a bachelor and have other expenses.

1) For starters I would buy a Dell Mini 10. These mini laptops are portable and you can take them anywhere. The price range is just right even with a 10 inch screen. The starting price is around 279.00 and you can always find a student discount somewhere. These laptops are just right for the price. I have one and they are just plain awesome.

SMART CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

This weeks question comes from Guy in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dear Bren:

Christmas is almost here and I don’t have any of my shopping done yet. I don’t have a lot of cash cause of the apartment I have. Any ideas on cheep, but good stuff for my girlfriend, mom, dad and little sister but not look cheap or cheesy? Thanks.

-Guy

Well Guy, like a lot of men, shopping is always done last minute. It’s great to have your own place, but when it comes down to having extra cash for the holidays, its rough. (BTW, I hope you checked out last weeks article on how to pimp your pad, here.) I have some great tips on how to buy those last minute gifts and make it look like you spent a lot.
